We decided to switch our regular gas bottle system to a refillable gas bottle system and it is definitely one of the best upgrades we have made to our motorhome.
There are so many benefits to having a refillable LPG gas cylinder, including saving time and money.
We have travelled all over the UK and Europe and have managed to refill our LPG gas bottle system everywhere we have been, it’s especially easy in Europe.
We thoroughly recommend that anyone with a motorhome or camper consider this option.
We use our gas system to fuel our water boiler, our heating, our oven and hob and our fridge, so it’s pretty easy to get through gas quickly, especially in the winter, which is why it’s important to have the best most cost effective system.

What is LPG?
Liquefied Petroleum Gas, more commonly known as LPG, is a versatile source of energy often used for heating and cooking purposes.
But did you know it’s also a reliable power source for motorhomes and campervans?
Importance of LPG gas in Motorhomes and Campervans
LPG is the lifeblood of many motorhomes and campervans, powering everything from heating systems to the stove.
It offers a compact and efficient way to take the comforts of home on the road with you.
How does the refillable gas bottle system work?
A motorhome refillable gas bottle system is a nearly full-circle system in which the driver of a motorhome or other vehicle has the capability to fill up their own tank with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at any time.
The motorhome’s fuel tank will not need to be replaced and there is no need for engine modifications.
This refuelling can be done at lots of fuel stations across the UK and Europe at anytime and it will cost around £1 per gallon equivalent thus making it more affordable for the consumer.
How do I refill my Gaslow?
We have created a YouTube video to show you exactly how the Gaslow refillable gas bottle system works. Please watch our video below.
What are the benefits of a refillable gas system?
There are many benefits to using refillable LPG cylinders rather than disposable ones. For starters, they are much more cost effective in the long run.
You will also find that they are much more convenient to carry, as you can simply refill them when they run out rather than having to carry and purchase new ones.
Additionally, refillable gas cylinders tend to be made of higher quality materials, which means that they will last longer and are less likely to break.
Finally, by using a refillable bottle, you are helping to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill each year.
Benefits of having a refillable gas bottle system:
Cost-Effectiveness
In the long run, refillable LPG gas systems prove to be more cost-effective. Why? Because you only pay for the gas you use, rather than purchasing new gas cylinders when your supply runs out.
Environmental Impact
Refillable systems are also a greener option. By reusing the same refillable bottle, you’re reducing waste and minimising the energy required for manufacturing, filling and transporting new containers.
Convenience
Tired of running out of gas mid-journey? With refillable LPG, you can top up your supply at any service station that offers refill of LPG. There is no need to keep exchanging bottles or carrying heavy bottles.
Accessibility
LPG is more accessible at petrol stations than gas bottles are. There are hundreds of Gaslow dealers all over the UK and Europe so it is an easily accessible system to have fitted.
- Removes the requirement to lift and handle the gas bottles into the van
- You can get underslung refillable gas bottles which can create more space in your motorhome or camper
- We can keep topping up our gas bottles at LPG stations and so we run less of a risk of running out of gas than we would with gas bottles
- You can buy a gauge for the refillable gas bottles so that you can see exactly how much gas you have left
Where can you fit a refillable gas system?
There are many different ways that you can install a refillable gas system in your motorhome.
You will need to determine where you want the tank to be located and then follow the instructions for installation.
It is important to make sure that you follow all of the safety precautions when installing any type of gas system in your vehicle.
We placed ours to directly swap out the cylinders in our gas locker, but you can also get underslung gas filling containers that will be placed under the body of your motorhome, meaning you can regain some space back.
How LPG Refillable Systems Work
Components of LPG Refillable Systems
The primary components of an LPG system include the refillable gas cylinder, a regulator, and the gas distribution system.
The regulator ensures a steady flow of gas, while the distribution system directs the gas to the various appliances in your vehicle.
Refilling Process
Refilling your LPG system is as easy as pumping gas into your vehicle. You simply connect your system to the LPG cylinder and pump, and it automatically fills to the correct pressure.
Safety Measures When Using LPG Systems
Proper Installation
It’s crucial to have your LPG system installed by a professional to ensure its safe operation. Incorrect installation can lead to leaks, which pose a serious fire risk.
Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance is also a must. This includes checking for leaks, ensuring valves are functioning correctly, and keeping the system clean and free of debris.
Emergency Measures
Know your emergency measures. This includes knowing how to quickly and safely shut off the gas supply and having a fire extinguisher on hand.
Choosing the Right LPG System for Your Vehicle
Size Considerations
The size of your LPG system largely depends on the size of your motorhome or campervan and how often you use your gas-powered appliances.
Larger systems with two bottles that can hold more gas than one bottle can, reducing the frequency of refills, but take up more space.
Brand Recommendations
There are several reputable brands in the LPG refillable system market, including Gaslow, Alugas, and Safefill.
Consider factors like cost, warranty, and customer reviews when making your decision.
How much does a Gaslow refillable system cost?
We had our Gaslow system supplied and fitted by a local motorhome servicing company to us and it cost us £700.
As we mentioned before though, this has been a much more cost effective option for us in the long run than replacing gas bottles.
It’s a good idea to check out the Gaslow dealer map that they have on their website, find local dealers to you, and ring around for pricing to try and find the best price and to find a dealer that you trust – Dealer Map – Official Gaslow Website for LPG Refillable Cylinders & Components (gaslowdirect.com)

Where to find LPG refillable gas service pumps
Not every fuel station supplies LPG refillable gas so you do need to have a look around where to find it, but someone has very kindly put an app & website together to make it super easy.
Whilst in the UK it can be a little harder, LPG is very much widely used in Europe and is a lot more readily available.
You can check which fuel stations stock LPG on the following website – https://www.mylpg.eu/
Refillable Gas System Adaptors
Once you have your gas system fitted to your motorhome, campervan or caravan it will come with a standard connection and this will work in all UK service points, but if you are thinking of heading over to Europe you will need some adaptors.
These can be purchased when buying your system or you can buy them from Amazon using the link below.
The adaptors work by just screwing into your standard connection, then working exactly the same by clamping on and filling up as normal. You can watch the YouTube video that we have created above to see exactly how it works in France.
What’s the difference between Butane, Propane and Autogas?
They are all hydrocarbon gases, which means they are made of hydrogen and carbon. Butane is made up of four carbons, propane has three carbons and autogas typically has two carbons.
Butane is a gas at room temperature and pressure, while propane is a liquid. Autogas is usually a mixture of propane and butane.
Butane is not commonly used as a fuel, because it has a low boiling point and can therefore easily evaporate.
Propane is the most common hydrocarbon gas used as a fuel, because it has a higher boiling point and is therefore less likely to evaporate. Autogas is also used as a fuel, but it is not as common as propane.
Do you need a professional to fit your refillable LPG bottle?
No, You can fit it yourself but If you have a refillable LPG bottle, you will need to have it tested by a professional.
This is because the gas needs to be stored in a special container that can withstand the high pressure of the gas. A professional will also be able to ensure that your bottle is properly sealed so that there is no risk of gas leaking out.
What is Autogas?
Autogas is a type of LPG that is specifically designed for use in vehicles. It is a mixture of butane and propane, and it is used as a fuel in many different types of vehicles including cars, vans, buses and trucks.
Autogas is often used as an alternative to petrol or diesel, and it can be used in both petrol and diesel engines. Autogas is cheaper than petrol or diesel, and it is also more environmentally friendly.
What are the benefits of using Autogas?
Autogas is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to petrol or diesel. It can be used in both petrol and diesel engines, and it is suitable for use in a wide range of vehicles. Autogas is also less likely to cause engine damage than petrol or diesel, and it produces fewer harmful emissions.
Conclusion
LPG refillable gas systems have become an essential part of motorhomes and campervans, providing a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and convenient solution for powering your vehicle’s appliances.
However, it’s important to remember that safety is paramount when dealing with LPG systems. Ensure proper installation, regular maintenance, and awareness of emergency procedures to keep your travels safe and enjoyable.
What is the lifespan of an LPG refillable system?
With proper maintenance, an LPG refillable system can last for many years. However, the exact lifespan can depend on various factors, including the quality of the system, frequency of use, and maintenance practices.
Can I install an LPG refillable system myself?
While it is possible, it’s strongly recommended to have your system installed by a professional to ensure safety and correct operation.
How often should I check my LPG system for leaks?
You should check your system for leaks regularly, at least once every few months. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, shut off the gas supply immediately and have your system inspected by a professional.
Are refillable LPG systems legal?
Yes, refillable LPG systems are legal and widely accepted. However, always ensure your system complies with the regulations of the country you’re traveling in.
Which brands of LPG refillable systems are recommended?
Brands like Gaslow, Alugas, and Safefill are well-respected in the market. However, the best brand for you may depend on your specific needs and budget.

I love everything about travel, from seeing new places, learning about new cultures and trying new foods! I believe that travel is one of the best forms of education you can get, I have learnt so much about myself and about the world from travelling all over. Travel is something I feel so passionately about, and I love the fact that we are now lucky enough to have this opportunity to do what we love as much as we can, it’s a dream come true.
Before we started travelling, I worked in local government in administration. I had been in this job for several years and had reached a complete brick wall where I was so fed up, but didn’t know what else to do. The only thing I knew that I wanted to do was to travel, and had wanted to do that for many years.
There were hundreds and hundreds of places on my wishlist that I wanted to go to, and I knew that going on a weeks holiday maybe twice a year if we were lucky wasn’t going to cut it.
After being in lockdown due to the Covid pandemic, and working from home staring at the same 4 walls every day, 2021 seemed like the perfect time for us to take the risk to finally do what we had dreamed of for so long.
It was a hard decision to completely change our lives, but so far it has been the best decision we have ever made!
